Costa Rica vs Ecuador: which photo destination first?

Both countries deliver on cloud forest — the difference shows up in almost everything else.

Both countries show up on every "top wildlife and landscape photography destination" list, and for good reason — they're the two most accessible slices of neotropical biodiversity for a first-time visitor from North America. Guests ask us to compare them often enough that it's worth answering honestly, including where Costa Rica genuinely wins.

Where Costa Rica has the edge

Costa Rica's tourism infrastructure is more mature — better roads, more English spoken, and a wildlife-lodge ecosystem built specifically around photographers, particularly for resplendent quetzals, sloths and the classic cloud-forest hummingbird feeders. If your entire trip is built around a short list of specific rainforest and cloud-forest species with minimal logistics planning, it's a genuinely excellent, lower-friction choice.

Where Ecuador pulls ahead

Ecuador's advantage is range, not any single ecosystem. Costa Rica doesn't have a Sierra region to speak of — no Andean condors, no volcano-and-páramo landscapes, no highland indigenous culture comparable to Otavalo's markets. Ecuador packs Andes, Amazon, Pacific coast and (via a short flight) the Galápagos into one country, all within short driving distances of each other. For a photographer who wants landscape and wildlife and culture in one trip rather than three separate ones, Ecuador does more with the same number of days.

Guide's note
If wildlife density in a single ecosystem is your only goal, Costa Rica's lodges are hard to beat. If you want the trip to feel like four different countries, Ecuador wins on range alone.

The honest answer

Neither country is the "wrong" first choice — they reward different priorities. Costa Rica is the simpler, more turnkey introduction to neotropical wildlife photography. Ecuador is the better choice if you want altitude, indigenous culture, and the Galápagos in reach of the same trip, and don't mind slightly more variable infrastructure in exchange for that range.

Final thought

We're biased — we shoot Ecuador every month — but we say this to every guest who asks: if you only have one big trip in you this decade and want the widest possible range of subjects, Ecuador earns the flight. If you want a focused, well-oiled wildlife-lodge experience, book Costa Rica and don't look back.
